Course Description:
This course is for people who will work in the BNC laboratories and covers facility policies and procedures, safety information and the Right-To-Know program. This provides access to the general laboratories though additional training will be necessary for special hazards such as lasers, and biological laboratories. This training does not provide access to the cleanrooms.

Missing a scheduled training session will result in immediate two week removal from all training calendars.

BNC 150, Fume Hood Safety Training

Course Description:
Safety policies and procedures for using chemicals in fume hoods. This is required before you may use chemical fume hoods in any laboratory or cleanroom in the Birck Nanotechnology Center. Missing a scheduled training session will result in immediate two week removal from all training calendars.

BNC 208A, General Biosafety

Course Description:
BNC 208A is an online course, offered continuously, that provides general biosafety training for Birck. BNC 208A is required for access to: BRK 1081, 2031, 2037, 2043, 2077, 2081, 2087, and 2120 (Biocleanroom).

Users must receive a score of 80% or better on the online quiz. 1. The quiz can be found on ITaP's Blackboard Learn website: http://www.itap.purdue.edu/learning/tools/blackboard/ 2. Click on “Access to Blackboard Vista (For classes held Fall 2012 or before)”. Once you have registered, all subsequent log- ins should show BNC 208A on your "My Blackboard" home page. 3. Course Description:
Bloodborne Pathogens (BBP) Training, offered in conjunction with REM, is required for access to any of the Birck BSL2 labs: BRK 1081, 2043, 2077, 2087, and the cell culture lab within the Biocleanroom (2120).

This course is also required for anyone working with human/mammalian cell culture, bacterial pathogens, human blood, human tissue.

Training is offered by Lisa Reece every Tuesday from 2-3 PM and every Thursday from 10-11 AM in BRK 2038 or another larger room if necessary to accommodate groups. Please contact Lisa Reece at lreece@purdue.edu to request additional information.

Cleanroom Ellipsometer

Only highly polished samples are capable of analysis. If your wafer has any haze due to pitting from etch processes, the laser on the ellipsometer will scatter, and your analysis will not be accurate.
Course Description:
The Birck Cleanroom Ellipsometer is used to measure the thickness of transluscent thin films such as silicon oxides and silicon nitrides. If the sample is prepared properly, you can also measure the refractive index of the film.

The Birck Cleanroom Ellipsometer also has the capability of measuring refractive index of the substrate as well as the extinction coefficient.

Training for the Ellipsometer takes place in the cleanroom of the Birck Nanotechnology Center. The ellipsometer is located in the Furnace Bay (R-Bay)

Please feel free to bring a sample if you would like to experiment with measuring it.

Filmetrics
Intended Audience:
Students who desire to measure thin film thickness

Course Description:
The Filmetrics is used to measure the thickness and optical constants (n and k) of transparent and semi-transparent thin film such as oxides, nitrides, resists, polyimides, polysilicon. The Filmetrics measures film characteristics by reflecting light and then analyzing this light over a range of wavelengths. Training will take ~1/2 hour. Feel free to bring a sample if you wish to measure it during training. Please meet at the instrument.

Getinge Autoclave

Course Description:
This training course is designed to show the user how to run the Getinge autoclaves in the Bindley Bioscience Center. This training is open to all Birck and Bindley users who need to sterilize glassware, liquids, and/or kill bacterial and mammalian cell cultures or other biowaste. THE TRAINING IS HELD IN BIND 233A.

Nanospec Thin Film Measurement

The Nanospec is capable of measuring thin films with on wafers with or without a pattern. The spot size of the measurement area is 35 microns in diameter for the 10X lens.

Protemp Horizontal Furnace

Course Description:
The Protemp Horizontal furnaces are 3 banks of 3 tube furnaces (for a total of 9 process tubes) consisting of many processes. This furnace system resides in Bay R of the Birck Cleanroom. Users are able to use each process tube individually even though the host computer controls all 9 tubes.

The nine process tubes are capable of the following processes:

Bank "A":
Tube 01 = Superclean Wet and/or Dry Oxidation
Tube 02 = Polysilicon / Silicon Nitride Deposition
Tube 03 = LTO Deposition

Please note - Tube 01 intended to be a very clean tube capable of producing a gate oxide quality film. It is tightly controlled, and not all samples are allowed within this process tube due to contamination concerns.

Bank "B":
Tube 04 = General Field Oxidation
Tube 05 = Metal / Contact Anneal
Tube 06 = Polysilicon

Bank "C":

RTA Jipelec

Course Description:
The Jipelec RTA is a rapid thermal annealer capable of annealing small samples and whole wafers (up to 8 inch diameter). This RTA can process in an environment of Nitrogen, Argon, Oxygen, or Forming Gas. It may also be used at atmospheric and vacuum pressures.

Training for the Jipelec RTA takes place in the cleanroom of the Birck Nanotechnology Center. The Jipelec RTA is located in R-Bay.

Thin Film Stress Machine
Intended Audience:

In addition, you must know the following parameters of your sample:
1. Substrate material
2. Substrate crystalline orientation
3. Substrate thickness
Course Description:
The Thin Film Stress Machine within the Birck Cleanroom is used to measure the stress of thin films deposited onto reflective substrates. The Stress Machine is capable of measuring film stress on 3, 4, 5, 6, and 8 inch wafers. Please note that anything less than a 3 inch wafer cannot be analyzed in the stress machine.

Training for the Stress Machine takes place in the cleanroom of the Birck Nanotechnology Center. The Stress Machine is located in S-Bay.

In order to use the stress machine, YOU MUST KNOW THE FOLLOWING PARAMETERS:
1. Substrate material
2. Substrate crystal orientation
3. Substrate thickness

Please feel free to bring your intended substrate for your pre-stress-measurement scan to the face to face training.
