Discovery Park Undergraduate Research Internship Program

"Data curation concept training: a micro-data rescue for GIS department project showcasing"

About the Project

Project Time & Type:
Fall 2014 - DURI
Research area(s):
GIS instituional compettiveness, web page assessment, design, implementation
Project Description:
This research involves students in engaging in a research metadata template design for GIS dept. campus and engagement and web page presence enhancement. The GIS dept. has generated a lot of data of its past efforts, but needs such materials cataloged and prepared for web implementation development with our team that includes Benjamin Branch, Nicole Kong and Ralph Mickey. The students will perform a literature review or environmental scan of other university GIS departments’ websites to see how they showcase their data services. From such perspective and framework, we will construct the skeleton of our design and with the team work build an enriched web presence for the Purdue Libraries GIS department. The students will gain some project management experience in this effort. The student will be exposed to a Drupal and html environment where such skills can be placed on their resume as well as album and storytelling design of past GIS activities. In addition, the students will learn the data policy of academic web development. This micro-data rescue effort will demonstrate possible training paradigms for more intense data rescue activity for library consideration and may result in a publishable paper. The students will work 8-10 hours a week on this project. Under the direction of Professor Benes Bedrich, PhD students Alejandro Guayaquil Sosa and Juraj Vanek will act as outside consultants so assist in web a GIS web page enhance that will add to the institutional competitiveness of the Purdue University. The goal at the end of semester is to have to generate 20 (non-production) workable web page concepts with Mr. Ralph Mickey. For web implementation at the end of the semester, we desire to have 8-10 web pages (in production) that exemplify new web presence for the GIS dept of the libraries.
Expected Student Contributions:
Interns will gain a sense of GIS data services as a tool on institutional competitiveness and awareness of how to best showcase such from other research 1 institutions. With our outside and internal consults. Branch and Mickey will guide student to advance the Purdue GIS web presence in relation to our campus services and support. Student may also begin to frame data rescue skills as data science skill set for real world project engagement experience.
