Project Description:
This team is investigating creating water quality models which are programmed with open-source components that can read open format, streaming data (Web Feature Services) from various servers, such as the EPA Exchange Network or USGS Realtime data servers. The team expects to investigate Web Processing Service (WPS) toolboxes using the open-source software system Geoserver and hopes to connect a string of such tools using VisTrails, which is an open scientific workflow and provenance management system (, to facilitate organized, reproducible data management, analysis, and visualization within an open-source WPS model flow.
Expected Student Contributions:
Programming on a server and testing the operation of an online model. Candidates should have an interest in creation of user interfaces (for web-based model) that are functional and efficient. Depending on background, the interns will be involved with constructing either the data handling or the interface aspects of an experimental effort to connect two online map-based models to servers streaming water quality data from EPA databases.

Desired Qualifications:
Desired: basic courses and interest in programming. Candidates should have an interest in creation of user interfaces that are functional and efficient. Some classwork or experience with at least one of these: XML processing or Python scripting or programming Java / C family applications or JavaScript web development. Familiarity with environmental (e.g. water quality, air quality, etc) models welcome but not required. Experience with code management tools such as github a plus.
