Discovery Park Undergraduate Research Internship Program

"Android Mobile App for Map-based data collection "

About the Project

Project Time & Type:
Summer 2013 - DURI
Research area(s):
Ag & Biological Engineering, Computer Science
Project Description:
A multi-state mapping effort created in Agricultural and Biological Engineering (named DriftWatch) has created a spatial database of crop fields and other sensitive areas. Currently, data is added to this database through a web interface and then provided to other web applications through an XML stream. The project team will be creating an iOS mobile app during the spring semester, and in the summer this intern will be tasked with re-creation of the iOS app in Android for tablet use. The app will use on-screen input over aerial photos to create geometry which is uploaded into the database. The team will need to investigate how the Android app can provide a successful user interface to a technologically-challenged user group, can communicate in a secure fashion with the database, and investigate if onboard location services are adequate for mapping new crop field polygons. The conversion to Android OS should include an evaluation of a proprietary SDK (licensed for use by Purdue) which claims to provide a fast and efficient pathway to creation of a mobile map-based Android app for data collection of polygons (like crop fields.) We envision the app will be built by the intern with and without this proprietary SDK and the comparison between the two is a significant portion of the intern’s research.
Expected Student Contributions:
Creation of an Android mobile app which uses a map interface to collect map geometry and upload it securely; and creation of an evaluation of some software tools that may assist in the task.
