Discovery Park Undergraduate Research Internship Program

"DIA2 - Deep Insights Anytime, Anywhere"

About the Project

Project Time & Type:
Fall 2012 - DURI
Research area(s):
human-computer interaction
Project Description:
The DIA2 project is supported by a large NSF grant. Our goal is to build a system for researchers to find, analyze, and visualize information about papers, proposals, funding rates, etc. The challenge is to build a powerful system that will be very easy to use for all our target audiences. You can see a prototype at ikneer.org.
Expected Student Contributions:
The intern will help in the area of human-computer interaction. The intern will help collect and analyze data from our user groups, and translate that into specific design requirements. For example, the intern may work with an interdisciplinary computer graphics and engineering team to conduct and analyze interviews. In the interviews, users will talk about their needs and desires for the system we are building. The intern will help extract specific lists of system features from the interviews. The list of system features goes to the programmers, who will execute the features needed by users. Any intern who is interested in computer interface design, qualitative data analysis, and more broadly human-computer interaction will find this experience useful.

Desired Qualifications:
Human subjects certification will be needed, but this can be done after the intern joins our research team. The skills needed here are the ability to recognize patterns in unstructured interview data. We will train the intern as needed. Good attitude, curiosity and enthusiasm are the most important!
