Project Description:
Nurturing Multiplicative Reasoning in Students with Learning Difficulties in a Computerized Conceptual-Modeling Environment (NMRSD-CCME) is a NSF supported five-year research and development project (2008-2013) that will augment teaching practice by providing the tools to analyze student conceptions and enact best-practice on an individual, student-needs basis. The purpose of this project is to: (a) create a research-based model of how students with learning disabilities or difficulties (LD) develop multiplicative reasoning via reform-oriented pedagogy, (b) convert the model into a computer system that dynamically models every student's evolving conceptions and recommends tasks to promote her/his advancement to a higher level of conceptual and procedural understanding of math problem solving, and (c) study how this computerized teaching tool impacts student outcomes, including diminishing the gap between students with LD and their normal achieving peers (NAPs). 2012-2013 will be our project Year 5. We will conduct a field test of the beta version of the PGBM-COMPS intelligent tutor system with 4th graders with LD. We will evaluate the effect of the system on closing the achievement gap between students with LD and their normal achieving peers.
Expected Student Contributions:
1) Attend weekly research meetings; 2) participate in elementary school site visits: monitor or facilitate students’ use of the PGBM-COMPS intelligent tutor or computer program, take notes on any problems or “bugs” the computer program may have and/or students’ reactions to the program, and 3) Participate in the development of the user’s guide for the intelligent tutor system we have developed, and/or (4) Help in research project web development

Desired Qualifications:
Passion for elementary math education; experiences and skills in working with elementary students with and without learning difficulties; Knowledge in elementary mathematics conceptual and procedural understanding and/or knowledge in web development/management is a plus.
