Discovery Park Undergraduate Research Internship Program

"Developmental Control of Cell Size and Stem Cell Maintenance in Plants"

About the Project

Project Time & Type:
Spring 2012 - DURI
Research area(s):
Developmental and Molecular Genetics, Live Cell Imaging
Project Description:
Our laboratory is studying the developmental control of cell size and stem cell maintenance in plants with an emphasis on the FZY/FZR family genes that regulate cell cycle switches via APC (Anaphase Promoting Complex)-dependent ubiquitin-mediated proteolysis in the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana. We aim to establish a new interdisciplinary project that combines cutting edge bio-imaging technologies with basic strategies in molecular, cell, and developmental biology to dissect the developmental dynamics of cell size control and stem cell maintenance in plants. DURI participants will be involved in the project that investigates 1) upstream transcriptional regulators and downstream proteolysis targets of FZR1 and FZR2 proteins, 2) developmental and signaling pathways controlled by FZR1 and FZR2 functions, and 3) genetic and regulatory interactions between FZR1 and FZR2 genes.
Expected Student Contributions:
DURI participants will perform 1) forward and reverse genetics (e.g., mutagenesis, generation of transgenic plants), 2) various basic techniques in molecular, cell and developmental biology (e.g., molecular cloning, polymerase chain reaction, isolation and analysis of DNA, RNA and protein, transformation), and 3) live cell imaging (e.g., optical sectioning), by carrying out the projects.
