Project Description:
Electroporation or electropermeabilization(EP) is a non-viral, physical technique that involves the application of electrical pulses of high intensity and short duration that temporarily and reversibly opens-up pathways in normally impermeable plasma membranes allowing macromolecules such as drugs, and genes to pass through. It offers several fold increased therapeutic benefit compared to using drug/gene alone. The electrical parameters, the voltage and the duration of the pulse vary from cell to cell. This necessitates the optimization for each cell type. In this research, it is proposed to optimize the electrical parameters for breast cancer cell lines and study the efficacy of the transfection using one or two assays, such as flow cytometry, fluorescence microscopy, and confocal microscopy, in addition to cell viability. In addition, the elctrical parameters for nanopartciles is also of interest.
Expected Student Contributions:
It involves preparing cells for applying electrical pulses-cell culture work, counting the cells, applying electrical pulses of various magnitudes and duration to identify the optimal value for a given cell line and performing one or two assays after pulsing - after 24 hours.

Desired Qualifications:
3.0 and above GPA, Junior/Senior standing, desire,interest and willingness to work with cancer cells and learn new things. It involves preparing cells for applying electrical pulses, applying electrical pulses of various magnitudes and duration to identify the optimal value for a given cell line, counting the cell viability and performing one or two assays after pulsing.
