Project Description:
The goal is to develop the next generation imaging tower for plant phenotyping (data collection). The tower will be as a dark room for the imaging of as big as 3 meters high hybrid corn plant. Besides mechanically building the tower, it will include the installation of lights, hyperspectral, 3D, thermal, and fluorescent cameras, and robotic arms. The tower will be fully automated which means the plant will be transferred into the tower, and the opening/closing of the gate, lighting, scanning, and robotic arms movement will all be synchronized and controlled. With the collected and processed image data, scientists and breeders and make judgement about the nutrition, stress, and predict grain yield potential.
Expected Student Contributions:
This is a complicated project and students will have different choices on the parts of the work based on their interests: 1, materials selection and purchasing. Mechanically build the tower, with gate and conveyer systems. Installation of the lights, robotic arms, and cameras. 2, CAD design of the system 3, software development for image data acquisition, storage, and preliminary processing 4, robotic arms control. Depending on the choice of the parts in the project, it’s not necessary but will be nice to have one of the following skills: Mechanics/hardware building skills Use of workshop tools CAD design C, Matlab, PLC programming Robotics research experience Machine vision, imaging processing
